Community in Action: Centennial Leaders Join Nourish to Serve and Connect

Last week, during Community Champions Week, we had the pleasure of welcoming leaders from the City of Centennial to spend time with us at Nourish Meals on Wheels.

Community Champions Week is a time to recognize those who step forward to support older adults and help ensure no one is left waiting for meals and connection. As demand continues to grow across the country, moments like this are a meaningful reminder of what it looks like to show up for our community.

Mayor Christine Sweetland, along with Council Members Ashish Vaidya, Amy Tharp, and Cynthia Sandhu joined us for a hands-on look at what happens each day and how it impacts older adults across our community.

The morning began in the kitchen, where the group rolled up their sleeves and joined our volunteers on the pack-out line. Together, they helped portion and package meals that would soon be heading out the door to neighbors across South Metro Denver.

It is a fast-paced process that depends on teamwork and care. Having the City team step in alongside our volunteers was not only helpful, it was also a meaningful reminder that this work is something we all share.

After spending time in the kitchen, Mayor Sweetland joined Sue, one of our dedicated volunteers, to deliver meals to two Centennial residents, Alfred and Maxine.

These visits are about more than a delivery of food. They are a chance to connect and share a moment together. For many of our clients, that consistency and personal connection are just as meaningful as the meal itself.

As Alfred shared with us:

“All the meals are excellent, and I truly appreciate them. The volunteers are wonderful. My little doggy and I are very appreciative. She starts jumping up and down when she knows they’re here, excited for her treat too! Out of all the programs, this one is unique. I’m very grateful to everyone at Nourish.”

His words reflect what we see every day. The meals and the visits both matter, and so do the relationships built along the way.

We are grateful to the City of Centennial for their continued partnership and for taking the time to experience this work firsthand. Their support helps make it possible to provide nutritious meals and meaningful connection to older adults across our community, where hundreds of neighbors rely on daily meals and connection to remain independent at home.

If you are inspired to be part of this work, we invite you to join us. Volunteers, donors, and community partners all play a role in making this work possible, and we would love to have you join us at Nourish Night Out or in another way that feels meaningful to you.

Because at the end of the day, this is what Nourish is all about.
