The Heart of Nourish: Celebrating Our Volunteers

Every meal delivered by Nourish Meals on Wheels begins with care in the kitchen. But what truly makes our program special happens at the front door.
It is the knock.
The smile.
The familiar face who asks, “How are you today?”
That moment of connection is made possible by our volunteers.
This month, as we celebrate Volunteer Appreciation Month, we want to recognize the hundreds of volunteers who make Nourish possible. Every day, they show up to pack meals, prepare deliveries, and drive routes across our community so that older adults can continue living safely and independently in their own homes.
But their impact goes far beyond the meals.
Our clients tell us that the visits from volunteers often mean just as much as the food itself.
One client recently shared:
“When the doorbell rings, I smile because I know there will be a smile on the face that greets me.”
Another client reflected on how meaningful those visits have become:
“I look forward to the delivery person. I feel more connected to the community.”
Sometimes, a meal can even bring back cherished memories.
“Meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and peas. We had that a lot at home. It was our Sunday dinner. It brings back memories.”
These moments are simple, but powerful. A few minutes at the door can remind someone that they are seen, remembered, and valued.
For many clients, volunteers are not just delivering a meal. They are delivering connection, kindness, and reassurance that someone cares.
That is the heart of Nourish.
Behind every route sheet and every meal bag is a team of volunteers who believe that neighbors should look out for one another. Whether someone volunteers once a month or several days a week, each act of service adds up to something extraordinary.
Together, our volunteers help deliver thousands of meals each week, but more importantly, they deliver thousands of meaningful moments of connection.
Throughout this month, we will be sharing stories of the incredible people who make this work possible. From longtime volunteers who have served for years, to new volunteers who are just beginning their journey with Nourish, every one of them plays an important role in our community.
To each and every volunteer who gives their time, compassion, and care, thank you.
You are the heart of Nourish Meals on Wheels.
