More Than a Meal: A Visit Between Friends

One of the most meaningful parts of Nourish Meals on Wheels is that the work we do rarely stops at the delivery of a meal. Over time, simple routines grow into something much deeper. Volunteers and clients get to know each other, share stories, and build connections that become part of everyday life.
Today we were reminded just how special those relationships can be.
Sue, one of our longtime volunteers, recently stepped away from her regular delivery route after many years of service. During that time she delivered meals to a client named Mary, who has been part of the Nourish family for more than ten years. Over the years their weekly doorstep visits turned into a friendship that meant a great deal to both of them.
Mary is celebrating an incredible milestone. Today she is 98 years old.

Sue arrived with a small bouquet of flowers and a box of cinnamon rolls, one of Mary's favorite treats.
It was not a scheduled delivery or part of a volunteer route. It was simply a friend stopping by to celebrate another friend.
Moments like this remind us why our work matters so much. The meals we deliver provide nourishment, stability, and peace of mind for older adults across our community. Just as important is the human connection that comes with every knock on the door.
For many of our clients, those brief daily visits become familiar faces and trusted friendships. For volunteers, the relationships they build often become one of the most meaningful parts of their service.
At Nourish, we often say that what we deliver is more than a meal. We deliver connection, kindness, and the reminder that someone is thinking about you.
Today that connection looked like flowers, cinnamon rolls, and a visit between two friends celebrating 98 wonderful years.
Happy birthday, Mary. And thank you, Sue, for reminding us what community really looks like.
