At Nourish Meals on Wheels, our volunteers are the heart and soul of our mission. Their dedication goes beyond delivering meals; they build lasting relationships that profoundly impact both their lives and those of our clients. Today, we are honored to share the story of one of our volunteers, Karen, and her experiences delivering her route.
Driving my route in Parker each week is incredibly rewarding. I love seeing Lavonne, Marguerite, Lynn, and all the rest—they ARE family to me. The hugs, smiles, and thank yous fill me with gratitude and joy. They share their stories, their struggles, and their joy.
Roger, for example, is a remarkable man who worked on the Saturn 5 rocket and has a 7-foot 3D printed replica in his foyer. He’s quite a character, having had multiple careers and a love for woodworking and cribbage. I've played 500 rummy with him—and trust me, he’s VERY competitive. He loves the meals, but even more, he loves the friendship we’ve formed. He saves the Parker Chronicle for me each week and shares what’s going on in his life.
The relationships we build with our clients are as important as the meals we deliver. Did you know that loneliness has health impacts comparable to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day? It's linked to increased risks of heart disease, depression, cognitive decline, and early mortality. My interactions with Lavonne, Marguerite, Lynn, and Roger not only fill my cup but also significantly enhance their quality of life.
At Nourish Meals on Wheels, we know that delivering meals is just part of what we do. The companionship, conversations, and connections we share with our clients are just as vital. Each week, I am reminded of the profound impact we have on each other’s lives.
Volunteers like Karen ensure that our clients receive not only nutritious meals but also the warmth of human connection. If you are looking for a way to make a meaningful difference in your community, consider joining our volunteer team. Together, we can combat loneliness and bring joy and support to those who need it most. Your time and effort can transform lives, including your own.
