Five Years of Service, Connection, and Kindness

When Dave K retired, he made a promise to himself. He wanted to spend

his time giving back and becoming more involved in service-oriented activities. Volunteering with Meals on Wheels had always been on his mind, and when the time was right, Nourish quickly rose to the top of his list.

Five years later, Dave continues to show up every Monday morning with dedication, kindness, and a genuine heart for connection.

For Dave, volunteering has become a meaningful part of his weekly routine. Monday mornings are intentionally set aside for his route. As he puts it simply, “It fits nicely as part of my week.” For the clients he visits, those Monday mornings mean something even more. They bring not only a nutritious meal but also a friendly face and a moment of conversation.

While meal delivery is at the heart of the program, Dave says the moments that stay with him the most are the small ones that happen along the way.

“When I actually get to talk with a client, over and above the expected brief niceties and small talk, that really stays with me.”

Those conversations may only last a minute or two, but they can brighten someone’s entire day. For many Nourish clients, that short visit is an important moment of connection.

When asked what advice he would give someone thinking about volunteering for the first time, Dave does not hesitate.

“Just do it! The rewards of volunteering are immediate.”

He says the joy you bring to someone else quickly finds its way back to you.

Outside of volunteering, Dave enjoys staying active and spending time with the people and activities he loves. He enjoys walking, listening to music, exercising with his wife, reading, watching TV in the evenings, and traveling to explore new places. One fun fact about Dave is that he officially retired on Halloween in 2020.

One of the things that surprised him most about volunteering with Nourish is how meaningful the simplest moments can be.

“Delivering a meal with a smile and being willing to briefly converse really means the world to clients,” he says. “And the joy I bring to others comes back to me.”

If Dave had to describe volunteering with Nourish in one word, he says it best.

Worthwhile.

We are incredibly grateful for Dave’s five years of compassionate service and for the care he brings to every delivery. Volunteers like Dave help ensure that our clients receive not only nutritious meals, but also connection, kindness, and a reminder that someone cares.

Thank you, Dave, for making Mondays brighter for so many. We are grateful to have you as part of the Nourish family.
