At Nourish Meals on Wheels, our volunteers play a critical role in our mission. Their work benefits not only our clients but also enriches their own lives. As one volunteer shared, "Volunteering gives me a sense of purpose. Being of service to the community and our fellow man makes the world a better place. It's about the quality of one's character."
An avid reader, reflecting on Viktor Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning," our volunteer emphasized the importance of hope and purpose in life. He recounted a story from the book about a prisoner who lost hope when a predicted release date passed, leading to his death shortly after. This poignant example underscores the significance of hope, something our volunteers strive to provide to our clients every day.
"My goal is to provide hope to our clients. I develop relationships with our clients by talking to them, listening carefully, and reacting to their needs," he shared. "For some, I tell jokes; for others, I find treats that brighten their day. I show interest in their health and well-being, and sometimes, I just provide companionship because they are lonely."
This volunteer, who is also a veteran, has gone above and beyond, taking a fellow veteran to the VA hospital for eye surgery and ensuring he had a ride home. He keeps track of clients' hospital stays and travels, and welcomes them home. However, he has also faced heartache, discovering that two people on his route had passed away alone. Because of his attention and reporting, welfare checks were conducted, preventing these deaths from going unnoticed.
Our volunteers' dedication and compassion are vital. Their commitment to being vigilant and caring for our clients ensures that no one feels forgotten. At Nourish Meals on Wheels, we deeply value the selfless service and heartfelt connections our volunteers bring. They are the heart of our mission, making a meaningful difference in the lives of our clients every day.
