Fueled by Kindness: Dave’s Story of Service and Strength

At Nourish Meals on Wheels, volunteers are the heart of everything we do. Each day, they deliver not only meals but also kindness, connection, and reassurance to older adults. Their visits brighten days, build friendships, and strengthen the sense of community we all share.

One of those dedicated volunteers is Dave W., a longtime member of the Nourish family. For more than a decade, Dave has been a familiar face on Tuesday’s Route 6 and Thursday’s Route 5, delivering meals with warmth and care. At 82, he’s training for a three-day bicycle tour through Santa Barbara, climbing the Santa Ynez mountains and riding along the Pacific Ocean, a reflection of his energy and determination both on and off the road.

Dave and his late wife, Cathy, began volunteering together many years ago. Serving side by side brought them closer to each other and to the clients they visited. Cathy had a special gift for forming friendships with clients that outlasted her passing and became a source of comfort for Dave.

Even after losing her, Dave never considered stepping away. His Thursday group has become a circle of friendship and support, and each client visit holds its own quiet reward, such as pausing to greet a client’s sister just to remind her she is seen and cared for. His grandsons now follow in his footsteps, helping deliver meals during summers and holidays, continuing a family tradition of service and compassion.

Dave’s story reminds us that giving often gives back even more, creating healing, hope, and belonging that endure through generations.
