When Kay and her husband moved from Sugar Land, Texas, to Colorado, they knew one thing they wanted to continue right away: delivering meals to older adults. For seven years, they had volunteered with Meals on Wheels in Texas. When they discovered Nourish Meals on Wheels, it was the perfect fit.
“We began volunteering at Nourish about two years ago,” Kay shared. “It was such a comfortable transition. We’ve met some really nice drivers and staff who made us feel at home.”
That sense of community has been just as meaningful as the service itself. On their weekly route, Kay and her husband not only bring nutritious meals, but also companionship and care. One client in particular has opened up to Kay about her health challenges.

“She shares some of her medical problems with me, and each week I can ask how things are progressing. She’s always thanking me for caring,” Kay said. “It’s just a little bit of time out of my week, but it always makes me feel better for helping others.”
For Kay, volunteering is about more than the meals. It is about the human connections made along the way. That knock on the door means someone cares, someone listens, and someone shows up.
At Nourish, volunteers like Kay make it possible to deliver more than 230,000 meals each year to older and homebound adults across South Metro Denver. Just as importantly, they deliver kindness, reassurance, and dignity.
If you have ever wondered what difference a few hours of your time could make, Kay’s story says it all: a little bit of time can change someone’s whole day and make your own brighter too.
